How can I effectively use Folders in FrontPage?

Unlike few things in life, Folders are free in a FrontPage Web.  We whole-heartedly recommend you use lots of them.  They make your life easier and have the added bonus of making navigation easier for your audience.

Sure, it is easy to put everything into the root directory (and that is the program default), but the fact of the matter is that you don’t have to and there will come a point where you wish you didn’t.  Web sites have a tendency to get large rather quickly and a little advance preparation is always worth the effort.

Also, remember, you can call those folders whatever you want.  Sure, “mycompany.com/thisisthefolderthatcontainsthepictureofme” is a bit much but “mycompany.com/aboutus” or “mycompany.com/onlinecatalog” is fine.  There is no need to be cryptic with a “mycompany.com/x4l.”  The same idea goes for the naming of individual files as well.

Make life easier - create a folder for every group of documents you’ll have at your site.  Put your images in one folder, your “about” information in another, and your documents in yet another.  Label the folders and directories in a way that makes sense.  There is simply no need to ever have to go, “where did I put that file?”  Use sub-folders as deep as you want if it makes sense and, darn it, feel clever for being so well organized.

Remember, FrontPage keeps track of where every file is so if you move a file from one folder to another, it will make sure the paths are correct.  This is good to know if you are wondering if it would be worth it to organize that out of control site.

Not only is this technique good for you, it is also easier for the viewer.  If your site starts to make sense through the URL structure, they will have another navigation tool for your site – always a good idea.
